Matrox Video Products Networked Broadcast Studio at NAB
Matrox Video Products Group and its partners will showcase all-digital Networked Broadcast Studio (NBS) solutions at NAB 2002 in booth S4427. Matrox's Emmy award-winning technology provides the building blocks that allow OEM partners to create reliable, high-performance NBS components, such as acquisition and playout video servers, realtime editing systems, and content creation stations, that can be integrated on a Storage Area Network (SAN). Matrox-based NBS components are unique in that they provide file format compatibility using the non-proprietary Microsoft-standard AVI file format. This important feature, in combination with a SAN, allows true media sharing. The Matrox booth is configured to demonstrate a digital newsroom environment compatible with Avid iNEWS. The Matrox NBS technology is equally applicable to post-production facilities.
Digital Newsroom Demonstration
The Matrox NBS partner demonstration is designed to show the streamlined workflow that can be achieved in a digital newsroom environment based on a SAN. The various stations acquire raw feeds directly to disk, edit in realtime, create graphics, titles and animations, then playout straight to air.
ACQUIRE
The Video Technics Apella Video Clip Server captures native-DV video to the SAN using SDTI for faster-than-realtime transfers. Journalists running Avid iNEWS on their laptops can access the Apella's media asset database via MOS protocol.
EDIT
As the material is being acquired, the editing process begins. Offline stations are used to log, trim and sequence the media. Matrox DigiSuite MAX online stations are used to finish the project before a real-time export of the timeline is stored on the SAN and made available to the playout server. Two editing solutions are featured - IMC Incite and Dayang X-Edit.
CREATE
The Inscriber CG·FX character generator is used to create titles with realtime animation and 3D effects. The title sequences are stored on the SAN, available to the editing stations.
Matrox also supplies the software codecs needed to share the common media assets with leading animation and compositing applications such as Discreet 3DS MAX, Adobe After Effects, and Discreet Combustion on offline stations without realtime video editing hardware.
PLAYOUT
Once individual projects have been completed, the Inscriber E-Clips server provides multi-channel playout. With E-Clips, programming can be scheduled days in advance, clips can be played back unattended, and playlists can be modified while on-air.
SAN
Central to this NBS setup is a state-of-the-art SAN provided by DataDirect Networks. The SAN allows all the workstations to access the common pool of media assets simultaneously.
